Father Simeon Eugene NewBold, Sr.

Father Simeon Eugene Newbold, Sr. is a native of Miami, Florida born as the fourth child from the union of David Jerome Newbold, Sr. and Catherine Melvina Higgs. He is a "Cradle Episcopalian" having been baptized, confirmed, and ordained both as a Deacon and Priest in his home church of the Historic Saint Agnes' Parish. He is a third generation Episcopalian on both sides of his family, with deep roots in the Anglican Church via his Bahamian ancestry.

 

From his youth, Father Newbold has remained active in the church, serving as an Acolyte from the tender age of five until his second year of college. As a young adult he was active in the Brotherhood of Saint Andrew and served many years on the Vestry of Saint Edmund's, Chicago, Illinois, prior to his entrance into seminary. Dr.

 

Newbold is a proud product of the public schools of Dade County, Florida, graduating from Miami Jackson Senior High School. He matriculated at Tuskegee University where he earned the Bachelor of Social Work degree and the Master of Education in Supervision Administration (second person in Tuskegee's history to acquire this degree). He received the Master of Divinity degree from the Episcopal Seminary of Seabury Western. Dr. Newbold earned a doctorate degree from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University.

 

After his ordination to the priesthood, Dr. Newbold assumed the leadership of Saint Simon's (Fort Pierce, Florida) as the first Rector in the church's then sixty-six year history. During his tenure, membership and outreach ministry dramatically increased. A first in Saint Simon's history, Dr. Newbold appointed a female Senior Warden, increased and exceeded annual revenue of prior years, and, became the first Episcopal Church to obtain a life membership in the Union of Black Episcopalians. It is also noteworthy that, Dr. Newbold instituted the S.H.A.R.E. feeding program in the parish, which served over 200 families each month. In Saint Simon's twenty-six consecutive years of Homecoming Celebrations, revenue surpassed each previous year by nearly $10,000. Dr. Newbold has been the Priest/Pastor of Saint Peter's, Richmond, Virginia, on the staff at Virginia Union University as Chaplain to the general student population and the football team, and he served with distinction as Chaplain/Vicar at Saint Paul's College in Lawrencville, Virginia.

 

Dr. Newbold has served his beloved church in a number of capacities. He was selected by the Presiding Bishop to serve on the National Commission for Black Ministries, Bylaws Committee of the National Union of Black Episcopalians, Coordinator for the Presiding Bishop Fund for World Relief, Commission on Ministry, and Commission on Minority Affairs in the Diocese of Central Florida. In the Diocese of Virginia he served as Clergy Deputy to Provincial Synod (Province 111), one of five Episcopal priests to participate in a ten day mission exploration trip to the Dominican Republic. He also served at the National Episcopal Church planning committee for "Day of Recognition" at the Washington National Cathedral.

 

Dr. Newbold served as Vice President of the Peter/Paul Development Center Board of Directors. An organization which provides afterschool and enrichment programs for high risk youth in innercity Richmond, Virginia. The organization also offers various programs for area Senior Citizens. As a major leader of the board, Dr. Newbold played an active part in rising needed funds for a new Center. The new $1.6 million dollar Peter/Paul Development Center stands today as a testimony of God's love in an area which is the most social/economic deprived area in the City of Richmond.

Dr. Newbold has lectured at Alabama State University, Miami Dade Community College, and Elizabeth City State University. He has been on the faculty at Saint Paul's College, an Episcopal affiliated college. He is a professor at Richmond Virginia Seminary, and Hampton University in the area of Religious Studies. Since 1982, Dr. Newbold has been an avid Scuba Diver, diving some of the most sought after dive destinations in the world. He is certified as a Rescue Diver, the highest certification for recreational diving. In addition to scuba diving, Dr. Newbold enjoys inline skating, reading, working out, and hanging out with family and friends. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Union of Black Episcopalians (Life Member), and National Association of Black Scuba Divers.

 

Dr. Newbold is the proud father of two beautiful children, Simeon, Jr., a full time college student and Krishna Alanna, a high school senior, soccer player, and future Veterinarian.
